“It was regrettable. It was essentially an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
Jones additionally emphasized that the gesture was completely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
