Chelsea Boss Maresca Dismisses Manchester City Speculation as Pure Gossip
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has labelled recent talk linking him with a return to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The 45-year-old, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's right-hand man in Manchester, responded to the ongoing speculation about his future.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea boss in June 2024, has a contract running until 2029, with a potential extra year option.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is little room for these kind of things."
He went on to explain, "First of all, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my attention, I have stated many times, is solely on this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was connected to a role in Italy with Juventus. So I don't pay attention because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, presently placed in fourth position in the top flight, are scheduled to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a 12:30 GMT fixture.
Tensions After Recent Comments
Maresca's most recent comments follow in the wake of he referred to a recent two-day spell as his "worst" since joining Chelsea.
Those initial words had sparked considerable talk of a possible rift between the manager and the club's key decision-makers.
When asked if he had discussed matters with the club's sporting directors, Maresca replied, "We are in the same building, so we talk about different things. But about the Everton press conference, no."
The Italian however affirmed he would "absolutely" remain at the club next season and urged the fans to keep backing the team".
In more positive news, Maresca indicated that sidelined attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return sooner than expected, possibly available for a match against Aston Villa later this month.
Perspective: Unresolved Tension
The perceived disconnect between Maresca and the club's hierarchy persists as an open wound that still create unease.
While there has been no further escalation of the matter in the open, there has equally been no resolution forthcoming, leaving the matter unaddressed.
The mood during the manager's press conferences has grown notably awkward, leading to fears it could undermine what has up to now been a promising start to the campaign.
Chelsea's sporting situation is strong: they are fourth in the Premier League, have reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals, and can secure a favourable Champions League draw with good results in their remaining matches.
