At least 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
