An Forecasting Platform Trader Earned $Nearly Half a Million from Bets on Venezuela's Political Shift.
A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was officially announced, sparking debate about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the US operation.
Sudden Shift in Forecasts
Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month surged in the period preceding President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the president had been seized.
A single trader, which became a member recently and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32,537.
It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Market Signals Before News Break
Market statistics shows that users estimated the likelihood of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.
However these probabilities had increased to over 10% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the early hours of January 3rd, pointing to a rapid movement in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.
"This particular bet has all the signs of a transaction based on non-public details," stated a financial reform advocate.
A small number of other traders also made large payouts from predicting the capture.
Political Attention Emerges
Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.
A bill presented on the start of the week aims to prohibit government employees from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the United States, with traders able to bet on everything from elections to politics.
This sector were examined under the previous administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting industry.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
